Chocolate Peppermint Balls Recipe (Chocolate Mint Truffles)
Christmas just is not the same without a batch of delicious rum balls! We always make them a few days before Christmas and do our best to resist eating them before the 25th.
What To Do With Extra Candy Canes
Candy canes are such an easy class gift and the kids come up with a load of them each year. They usually eat one, remember they don’t really like them, and the candy canes end up sitting there uneaten! Not anymore!
They are essentially chocolate covered rum balls (without rum) topped with crushed-up candy cane to give them a blast of mint flavour goodness!
What You Need
- 1 pack sweet biscuits (E.g. Arnott’s Arrowroot, Marie, etc)
- 3 tablespoons cocoa
- 3/4 cup shredded coconut
- 300g tin condensed milk
- 200g milk chocolate melts (white chocolate is fine too)
- Candy canes
- Optional – Peppermint Extract
How To Make Choc Peppermint Balls
- Crush biscuits in a food processor or use a sealed sandwich bag with a few biscuits at a time and smash with a rolling pin.
- Mix in cocoa and coconut.
- Add condensed milk and mix well.
- Roll into balls around 3 to 4cm in diameter.
- Melt chocolate in the microwave or stovetop.
- Roll balls in melted chocolate until covered. Place on a tray lined with baking paper.
- Crush candy canes into small pieces and sprinkle on top of chocolate balls before the chocolate hardens.
- Place in refrigerator until set.
- Serve and enjoy!
Adding Peppermint Extract
I usually do not add any peppermint extract to my peppermint bliss balls, simply because my kids aren’t fans of mint flavours. They love them with the crushed candy cane on top and that is just enough mint flavouring to suit them.
Recipe Variations
Switch out the milk chocolate with dark or white chocolate instead.
OR like I mentioned earlier, add rum just like you would to my basic recipe and create peppermint rum balls coated in delicious chocolate!
FAQs & Tips
How do I store chocolate truffles?
Store the chocolate peppermint truffles in an airtight container in a cool place. If you live in a warmer climate or have a warm house, they are best stored in the refrigerator to prevent them from melting and sticking together.
Can I substitute with white chocolate?
Yes, you can substitute white, dark or even mint chocolate with this recipe. Experiment with different flavours to find which you love best!
